Past Event: AN Awareness Month 2025

Benign Doesn't Mean I'm Fine Webinar Series | May 2025

In May, in recognition of Brain Tumour Awareness Month and Speech & Hearing Month in Canada, the Acoustic Neuroma Association of Canada (ANAC) presented an engaging four-part webinar series dedicated to raising awareness about acoustic neuroma/vestibular schwannoma (AN/VS).

Although acoustic neuromas are benign tumours, they can have life-altering impacts on physical, emotional, and cognitive health. This series shone a light on the often invisible, misunderstood, or minimized challenges faced by those living with this condition.

The events were open to all—patients, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and anyone interested in learning more. Because living with “benign” doesn’t always feel fine, ANAC invited everyone to join the conversation.

Each week featured:

  • Patient Story – Real-life experiences living with acoustic neuroma
  • Expert Talk – Insights on diagnosis, treatment, and care
  • Live Q&A – An opportunity to connect with speakers in real time

Together, we turned awareness into action and support.

Week 1)
Cognitive & Emotional Impacts of AN/VS

The series began with a deep look into the cognitive and emotional impacts of acoustic neuroma. A patient shared their personal journey navigating brain fog, anxiety, and questions of identity, while a neuropsychologist unpacked the physiological and psychological roots of these challenges—and offered strategies for navigating them.

Week 2) Unilaterial Hearing Loss/Single-Sided Deafness & Hearing Rehabilitation

In week two, the focus shifted to single-sided deafness (SSD). A patient described the challenges of sound localization, background noise, and maintaining social connections. An audiologist then discussed treatment options, outlining their benefits, limitations, and practical tips for adapting in a hearing world.

Week 3) Balance Issues & Vestibular Rehabilitation

Week three highlighted how balance issues reach far beyond the physical. A patient explained how balance challenges reshaped their daily routines, while a vestibular therapist emphasized why rehabilitation is especially important (and often complex) for those with acoustic neuroma.

Week 4) Facial Paralysis & Nerve Recovery

The series concluded with an honest conversation about facial weakness and paralysis. A patient reflected on the uncertainty and hope of recovery, while a facial neuromuscular therapist and neuropsychologist explained what’s happening beneath the surface—and what recovery can look like.
